St. Patrick’s Day Activities for Kids

St. Patrick’s Day is a prime opportunity for children to learn about the history along with celebrating the traditions.  Parades, parties, and family-friendly festivals should be abundant. This holiday was originally a religious holiday in honor of Saint Patrick celebrated in Ireland.  Today St. Patrick’s Day is not only celebrated in Ireland, but around the world.  The traditions vary from country to country and even through the various cities in the United States.  Traditions in the United States include wearing green, shamrocks, leprechauns, and the rainbow with the pot of gold, and eating corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes.

Learning Activities for St. Patrick’s Day

On Teach Net there are many different activities that you could do at home to celebrate and include learning.  There are directions for art activities, recipes to make at home, science, social studies, and books to read with your child.  I thought the activity of creating a shamrock from terry cloth and alfalfa seeds was creative and would be a great activity for younger children.  I also thought the social studies activity of discussing Ireland and why it is referred to as the “Emerald Isle” was intriguing.

Fun Online Games

Many children’s websites have fun games for child to play that are St. Patrick’s Day themed.  These games include matching, vocabulary word searches, and puzzles. Kaboose has a fun online quiz that children can take based on traditional St. Patrick’s Day traditions.  The great thing about this game is it gives feedback and facts when a child answers the questions right or wrong including pictures.  There are also more games on this page including coloring pages and puzzles.  Primary Games – St. Patrick’s Day Games and A Kid’s Heart – Holiday Games also have great online games with St. Patrick’s Day themes for kids to play and learn.

Activity Village – St. Patrick’s Day Crafts

Crafting is always a fun home learning activity.  Activity Village is a great resource for all types of crafting activities based on holidays.  Each of their hands on activities includes a photos of the steps of the project, the materials required, and specific instructions.  This is very organized and helpful for parents planning and assisting children with a crafting activity.
