Playing and Learning – Educational Games for Children
Educational games are a fun way for kids to learn new concepts and practice old ones. They get to test their skills while working through challenges. They truly make learning a fun experience, which is what it should be!
The Woodlands Junior School’s games website, based out of England, has links to hundreds of games that are well suited for elementary aged children, ranging in different topics, themes and concepts! According to “The Times Educational Supplement” this site is the most visited school website in that country!
You will find so many games that are split up into three categories, consisting of maths, literacy and science. Once you select one of these three categories, you can then choose from more specific topics. The math sections include number skills, shape and space skills, data and probability, measure skills and math investigations. The literacy section includes words and spellings, grammar, punctuation, and writing text. The science section includes living and life processes, physical processes, materials, earth and space and water.
The video below shows demonstrations of just two of the many math games, “Give the Dog a Bone” and “Shark Numbers” that are available to play, but played on a touch screen! As you can see, there are many ways to use these great games!
Games are not the only thing included on this site. You can get links to worksheets, test prep and other resources for students and parents.
The website started out as a hobby, but quickly grew into an ever-growing place for learning and fun! There is also a homework help section, where you can learn about many different topics, facts and stories.
