Natural Disasters – A Chance to Learn About The World

Natural disasters are devastating events that affect people all over the world, not only those who are directly involved in one. From hurricanes and earthquakes, and most recently tsunamis, there are a lot of things that children need to know about these world-changing events. Sometimes it can be hard for a child to understand what is going on, along with all the side effects that occur.


Currently the news has some great coverage of the tsunami in Japan. To start explaining this horrible event to children, often times people need to break it down, so that they understand what is happening.

BBC has a video which quite simply explains how a tsunami occurs, along with some reasons why places that are in coastal areas are at such great risk.  It is a clear and simple explanation that most children will learn and understand.

There are also different videos of real footage of the destructive tsunami in Japan. There is so much information on this site. You can even look at a video that explains the risk of radiation near the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The BBC website has tons of information on this current disaster that is taking place. You can use this to show children how real these events are, and how they effect people all over the world. Libraries and websites can give you more information about tsunamis and other natural disasters. Although devastating, it is important that children know about these events and are aware of what is happening in other parts of the world.
