Identify Lines of Symmetry in 2D Shapes
Join Mr. Rivera at the Digital Arts Club and create your own e-card!
This fun, interactive lesson helps elementary students identify lines of symmetry in two-dimensional shapes and to explore concepts of symmetry through the use of pattern block designs.
This lesson is designed to help children:
- identify and select designs that are symmetrical
- learn that when a mirror is held against a design, it can create a symmetrical picture – both sides match exactly
- practice drawing lines of symmetry – They learn that some designs have more than one line of symmetry
- design an e-card using the concept of symmetry – They are asked to add one more pattern block to the design to make it symmetrical
This interactive tutorial is one of three components that comprise this lesson. Also included is a review activity where students are provided with guided practice and then a timed and graded quiz at the end to ensure mastery of the learning objectives.
