Most public schools are a place for children from all around the country, or world, to come together as they learn and grow through education. New York, often referred to as a melting pot, has many public schools scattered throughout the city.
Brazilian artists Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, aka “Os Gemeos” have joined forces with famous graffiti artist, Futura 2000, to complete an 80-foot mural on the wall of one New York school. New York creative studio, AKANYC and street art website 12ozProphet received support from Nike and paint company MTN Colors.
The mural is on the west-facing wall of P.S. 11, William T. Harris Elementary School. The mural creation began on Friday, August 6 and was recently completed on August 13th.
The theme of the mural is a message of international unity. Os Gemeos often uses this giant yellow character in many of their pieces of art. Along with the character, known as ‘the giant’ flags from countries from all over the globe adorn the wall. These flags are painted in non-traditional colors. The artists say the idea behind this is that there is ‘one world, one voice, no borders, no separation…everything and everyone working together for a single cause that is a better world.”
AKANYC creative directors hope to make more murals like this one, so that people and students in the local communities can be enriched in a creative way. By combining styles so different from each other, this painting stands alone to show the community and the schools that we can all work together to make the world a better place.
